press(ure?)

Friday, June 29th, 2007

last friday, the 22nd, the district table was featured in the washington post express. this is one of dc’s free daily papers that are distributed at metro and bus stops. i am incredibly thankful to jennifer barger who is the features editor who previously chose to put my very first chair (the m chair) in the express as well. i have yet to hear if there has been any immediate response, but it’s nice to at least be mentioned.

another one bites the dust

i have made and delivered another district table, and two more are in process (one has been sold, and the second is for ‘inventory’). people seem to like these. it is also supposed to be featured in tomorrow’s (friday) edition of the washington post express, so i’m guessing that making more of them will be in store.

knock. version 2.0

Friday, June 8th, 2007

i’ve completed the first of two Knock tables that have been ordered. if you remember, the table was designed by john giesecke last year. the dimensions are slightly larger than the last one that i made. i enjoy the form, but the method that i have to use to make it is less then ideal. it wastes a lot of material and it is by no means easy, so in the future i hope to be using different methods to make this. i put myself in the picture here so you could see the scale of the piece (and because i’ve received a large amount of email asking for more pictures of me. you guys are so demanding.)

i’ve got new york…

not quite all to myself (if only someone would enjoy my stephin merritt references as much as i do).

earlier this week, elaine and i (i recently heard someone argue that ‘me and elaine’ is actually the correct phrasing, but if that’s the case, i may have to requestion all of my grammatical foundations, so i’ll just stick with ‘elaine and i’) got the opportunity to go to the big city for a big covenant house annual dinner fundraiser thing. it was held at the waldorf astoria, which is super nice. we also were able to go see ‘the color purple’ on broadway and it was incredible. it was a fun quick run up the coast, but i wish i could have stayed longer.

i’m back

ok. as i’m sure you all have noticed, i have been out of commission for way too long. and here’s the reason(s) why.

these are two cabinets that i have been working on for approximately the last three months. it has been a struggle both from my lack of cabinetry knowledge and the lack of space in the shop for the size of this project. but everything ended up well, and the family was very excited to finally receive their pieces.

a few details about the project. there is also a third piece, a toy chest, that is essentially complete, just waiting on a piece of hardware. all three pieces are made out of cherry, both solid and veneered plywood. i did not apply the stain. that was done by a friend of the new owners of the pieces. i wish that i had pictures of some of the parts before stain, because there was some absolutely gorgeous grain, especially in the door panels, that was completely blocked by the color. the top picture is of the stereo cabinet. 60″ long, 24″ deep, 31″ tall. behind the left door are four shelves for cd storage and mail. the other two bays contain adjustable shelves. the top is solid cherry with maple inlay. the bottom picture is a dining room sideboard that will receive a marble top. the dimensions of this piece are very similar to the stereo cabinet, but this one is only 20″ deep.

i’ll try to get more pictures of them later. but right now i’m just glad it’s done and i can get back to doing my own stuff.
