new showroom

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

so i’ve got some very good news. i’ve got a new showroom.

showroom

yeah, it’s called my apartment. i had to clear out my stuff from the gallery and where else is it going to go? that’s right, my living room.

after i cleared out the pieces, i took the white negative chair over to homebody and they loved it. i made them put it by their gorgeous casa bontempi table that i’m in love with and it looked really good.

so here’s hoping that more good things are to come.

i’ve finally updated my portfolio site with the new pieces. enjoy.

what a difference a day makes…

i’m guessing that everyone will be reading this post before the previous one seeing as how i only posted that one about an hour ago, so this may not be that impressive. but once you see the attempts that jamie and i made yesterday and then compare these pictures to those, you’ll know what i’m talking about. it’s amazing what the correct stencil material can do for you.

and as usual, when i start working on something i immediately want to know what happens with the deviations. sure, i can get five prints with black ink, wash the screen, then get 5 prints with red ink, but what happens if i don’t wash the screen in between and just keep adding new colors? well, here’s how it all went down. (there’s a full view of each print plus a detail view of spots that i found interesting).
so i started with straight up black.

then, i did a run with red, not cleaning out the black.

next came some yellow.

now we’ll do a run with white.

and we’ll finish up the series with blue.

so there you have it. quite a successful first series of prints. now you can read on down and see the crappy beginnings. stay tuned for more.

experimenting

so jamie has been urging me for a while now to convert my back room into a screen printing facility. well we finally went yesterday and got some supplies, cut out some stencils real quick (we used some drawings i already had (jamie chose le corbusier’s lc4 chaise lounge and i chose a portrait of chris, one of the students at the shop) and cut them out on the laser cutter at work), and saw what would happen. as you can see, we weren’t entirely ’successful’. but we did learn what doesn’t exactly work. hopefully this will lead to some cool stuff in the future.

word of the day.2

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

the word of today is sidereal - adj. - of, relating to, or expressed in relation to stars or constellations. i actually know where this one came from. i am reading a book called Pendulum about the life of Leon Foucault who was the first person to empirically show that the earth rotates. he did this using a pendulum, which if you’ve ever been to the Pantheon in Paris, you have seen a replica. anyway, when he got older and couldn’t leave his bed, he invented a device called a siderostat that allowed him to watch the night sky while lying in bed. it’s similar to a heliostat which allows one to look at and study the sun. but i’ve always liked the word sidereal, pronounced sid-air-ee-uhl.

fine. no seriously. ok, i’ll do it. no. for real. alright, i did it. happy? are you happy now?

pictures of the opening and afterwards are here.

i’ll also add a link in the sidebar so you can see other non-posted images in the future.

take your kids to work day

tuesday afternoon larry and i took the students over to the honfleur gallery so that they could see the stuff that i had made on display. i especially wanted the three students whose portraits i had made to see their faces on the wall. the three were pretty excited about their images, but as for the rest of the stuff, who knows what they thought. just a fascinating demographic to be working with.
